Like several other Disney films from the 1990s, the film received a direct-to-video sequel and spinoff TV series that lasted two seasons. Hercules was a box office success and raked in $252 million on an $85 million budget and was nominated for an Oscar for the original song Go the Distance. In the film, Hercules is assisted by the satyr Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), who teaches him to use his superhuman strength to prove himself worthy of living among the gods on Mount Olympus. Originally released back in 1997, Hercules was a retelling of the Greek legend in which the hero must save Olympus from God of the Underworld, Hadesįriends actor Tate Donovan voiced the lead role, alongside Susan Egan as his love interest, Megara, and James Woods as Hades, who kidnaps the demigod Hercules as a baby and forces him to live alongside mortals. The original animated Hercules was was released in 1997 and was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker as a musical retelling of the Hercules legend, with music by Alan Menken. With Hercules still in need of a final script, we probably won't see a release until 2024 at the very earliest. THR say that it is unclear as of yet whether the new take on Hercules will keep the original’s musical elements. Joe and Anthony Russo, the filmmakers behind Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War and the upcoming Netflix blockbuster The Gray Man, are set to produce the film via their AGBO banner. With the Snatch filmmaker set to take on directing duties, Disney’s now on the search to find writers for the project previously, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callahan, had penned the film’s first draft. Ritchie, who previously directed Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin, will helm the remake based on the 1997 animated film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. British filmmaker Guy Ritchie has been tapped to direct Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Hercules.
